3 Must-Hike Trails at Lake Guntersville State Park This Fall

As the temperatures drop and the leaves turn to shades of amber and gold, there’s no better time to explore the natural beauty that surrounds Lake Guntersville. Located in the heart of Marshall County, Lake Guntersville State Park offers some of the best hiking trails in North Alabama.

Seales Trail –Lakeside Views & Wildlife Watching

Seales Trail is known for its proximity to the water and peaceful atmosphere. This 2.25-mile trail winds along the shoreline of Lake Guntersville and offers stunning views for almost the entire route. You can begin your hike either at the Town Creek Bridge on AL Hwy 227 or from the campground within Lake Guntersville State Park. Along the trail, you can expect to see limestone outcrops, eagles, osprey, and other native wildlife.

Cutchenmine Trail –A Walk Through History and Nature

Starting at Short Creek on AL Hwy 227, the Cutchenmine Trail follows a former coal mining road that now serves as a peaceful hiking path. During fall, the route is framed by vibrant foliage, and while the trail shines in spring and summer with wildflowers and blooming oakleaf hydrangeas, its beauty in autumn is not to be missed. The trail runs along the lake, with large boulders lining parts of the path and occasional sightings of turtles and fish in the shallow waters.

Loop Trail – A Forested Escape at the Base of Taylor Mountain

If you’re looking for a shorter, beginner-friendly hike, the Loop Trail is a great choice. It begins across the street from the Lake Guntersville State Park Campground Store and connects with the more challenging Lodge Trail. At the first trail intersection, turn right to stay on the Loop Trail, which runs along the base of Taylor Mountain. The 1.5-mile (one-way) trail offers a relaxing walk through hardwood forest, with opportunities to see limestone rock features and deer along the way.
